Volunteering Day with Cemex UK

Volunteers from Cemex UK joined us at our nature reserve and new corporate events space for a ‘lend a hand day’ where they offered their skills and people power through their volunteering program.

This program gives employees the opportunity to participate in skilled volunteering, enabling everyone to be involved in building a better future and we were so pleased they chose our charity to support.

A spokesperson for Cemex said “Volunteering is one of the ways in which Cemex can demonstrate its commitment to creating positive social impact and we are continuously exploring new opportunities to support local nature conservation”.

On the day, the group engaged in many hands-on activities that created a positive impact to the site and it was such a productive day thanks to their energy and enthusiasm.

With one of the key focuses being biodiversity enhancement, individuals helped with continuing the creation of the butterfly bank including making a hibernaculum to provide a safe haven for amphibians, reptiles, invertebrates and small mammals.

Other tasks involved the maintenance of the site with weeding, pruning, cutting back brambles, strimming and mowing, which helped tidy up the area and will help the trees thrive in the orchard.

Keeping with the theme of sustainability, they helped to upcycle wooden structures and furniture as well as sowing recycled indoor mats for our indoor spaces.

The final task completed was wood preserving our new BBQ cabin in readiness for it to be used as a talking therapy space for a local Parkinson’s disease support group over the winter.

Discussions and plans were also put in place for a second group of Cemex volunteers to visit the site to offer their expertise and materials to build a disabled access ramp to make our compost toilet more accessible.

Feedback from the day

“It is always a privilege to work in the community, giving back to such a great cause. I’m proud of the team for their hard work but mostly for the fun and good spirit that they brought to the day”
