Help Support Visually Impaired Runner, James, Run The London Marathon

One of our amazing volunteers James Morrison, a 45-year-old from Stratford-upon-Avon, is on an extraordinary journey. Despite being severely sight impaired, James is lacing up his running shoes to take on one of the most iconic challenges - the London Marathon. This incredible feat is made possible thanks to his partnership with his running guide, Beth, who will be by his side every step of the way.

What makes James's story even more inspiring is his generous heart and commitment to making a difference. James has chosen to dedicate his marathon run to raising funds for our charity, to help support individuals with mental health issues and learning difficulties through our horticultural therapy programme.

When asked why he selected Forest of Hearts, James shared his passion for nature and the improvement of mental health and wellbeing. James said, “Forest of Hearts supported me through their Green Therapy programme when my mental health was very low and I was financially struggling. They helped me get out of the house, access nature and taught me how to live again. I learned life skills and gained connections within the town too. It really helped me gain confidence and improve my mental health and I've now been off anti-depressants for 5 years”

"Running the London Marathon is a personal challenge but knowing I’m supporting such an amazing local charity and an important cause gives me even greater motivation."

With his unwavering determination, James is not only breaking barriers but also raising awareness about the power of community and proving that anything is possible. His efforts remind us all that no matter the obstacles, anyone can make a positive impact.

James started losing his sight in 2018 after being sent to hospital after a routine eye check. He was then hospitalised for an indefinite period and now has to walk with a mobility cane. He also suffered a stroke and his neurological disorder sparked a weight loss journey where he started eating healthier and once he was no longer wheelchair bound or on crutches, began walking and running on a treadmill at home. He then found ‘blind running’ through a local Parkrun and started running with guides. He has now lost an incredible 8 stone and is gearing up for the pinnacle of marathon runs after thinking he might never walk again.

He is a true role model and inspiration for the visually impaired and we couldn’t be more grateful to James and Issy for their dedication and support.

His guide, Beth, is a 21 year old PICU Nurse and trail runner who started running at the age of 12. She started volunteering as a guide runner to help the visually impaired and to make memories. She has always dreamed of running the London Marathon so is excited about the opportunity.
