Welcombe Hills School MoveForward Project - Week 2

The second session of our programme with Welcombe Hills school and ThinkForward was at The Dell in Stratford-Upon-Avon, in the garden we created for the Royal Shakespeare Company.

We started the day with a litter pick of the area to clean it up and recycle what was collected. It was great to see each individual’s sense of community and pride to keep a well-loved green space tidy.

The gardening tools were back out as they broke into small groups to replace plants in the planter and plant snowdrops, bluebells and crocus bulbs in advance of beautifying the area for Springtime.

In the second hour of the session the group participated in a biodiversity audit of the area where they collected data on what species of trees, birds and insects they found whilst learning about the importance of biodiversity and how to boost it.

We finished the day by creating bug hotels to live in gardens of their choice to provide a safe haven for a number of species of insects.

We now look forward to next week’s apple picking activity at The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust’s Mary Arden’s Farm.

A word from the group…

“It’s made me feel good picking up the litter today because it’s important to keep our community clean”

“We have learned about what biodiversity is and why we should look after things like bees and butterflies”

“I can’t wait to come back in Spring and see all the bulbs we planted turn into colourful flowers”

“I’m going to put my bug hotel in my gran’s garden to give the bugs there a nice home”
