From Scrap to Sanctuary: Making Bird Boxes For Our Gardens
At Forest of Hearts, we believe that what many see as waste can become something wonderful. Recently, our community groups have been busy transforming discarded pallets and offcuts of wood rescued from skips and builders yards into handcrafted bird boxes, turning scrap wood into safe havens for local wildlife.
Sustainability in Action
his project is about more than just recycling. By repurposing pallets, we’re reducing waste, conserving resources, and showing that sustainability can be creative and practical. Each bird box is a testament to the idea that with imagination and care, materials destined for landfill can instead nurture life.
Learning New Skills
Our Green Therapy groups, made up of local individuals living with mental health challenges and learning difficulties, have embraced this project wholeheartedly. Through hands-on workshops, participants have learned valuable woodworking skills: measuring, cutting, assembling, and finishing. These sessions have not only built confidence and practical knowledge but also brought together teamwork and pride in creating something meaningful.
Supporting Biodiversity
The impact of these bird boxes will go far beyond our workshops. By providing safe nesting spaces, we’re helping local bird populations thrive. From robins and sparrows to blue tits and wrens, these boxes will support species that play a vital role in pollination, pest control, and the overall health of our ecosystems.
