About the Forest of Hearts

The Forest of Hearts is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) promoting accessible and sustainable agroforestry, or “Forest Gardens” which exist for enjoyment, education, volunteering and also support good causes” Registered Charity No. 1160589. Supported by a board of trustees, the Forest of Hearts has small team of professionals and is looking to engage a large membership of supporters and volunteers who share the same aims.

The Forest of Hearts works in partnership with other charities and community organisations to create places of purpose and pleasure which help individuals to develop skills, confidence and friendships that like the Forest Garden itself can grow and thrive. You can help us to create edible gardens for good by becoming a corporate sponsor of this environmentally sustainable new charity.

 What is a Forest Garden?

A forest garden is a low-maintenance sustainable plant-based food production and agroforestry system based on woodland ecosystems, incorporating fruit and nut trees, shrubs, herbs, vines and perennial vegetables which have yields directly useful to humans. You can support the creation of a Forest Garden by making a donation now.

What types of edible crops will be available?

We will grow over 100 varieties of edible crops from the familiar fruits, nuts and berries, through to unusual leaves and flowers for salads and some edible roots and tubers for carbohydrate. The main beneficiaries will be local schools, community groups and volunteers, who will gain free, nutritious food.

How long will it take for the trees and crops to grow into a Forest Garden?

Phase 1 involves the planting of the tree canopy and hedging, creating the pond and seating area and laying down the accessible paths.. This will allow people to see the outline shape of the forest garden within the first one to three years. During Phase 2, as the trees and hedging mature, more understorey shrubs and climbers can be planted and will be noticeable between year three and seven. After year seven onwards, the trees and crops will grow into a noticeable Forest Garden, where most of the crops observed can be eaten.

What is the Forest Garden Masterplan?

The design of the layout of the first Forest Garden for the Forest of Hearts is inspired by the elegant shapes found within an expensive watch movement. The circular shapes linked by straight and winding paths provide a place of beauty and function where over 100 fruit tree guilds will be established over a five-acre site.
